Nigeria data governance

A group of Nigerian researchers working in Nigeria (from University of Lagos; Rivers State University of Technology; Federal University of Technology, Minna and Federal University of Lafia); and in the UK (De Montfort University, Leicester)  in collaboration with the EU Data Governance team (De Montfort University) are conducting a research to understand Nigerian citizens’ perceptions on data protection and privacy.

Researchers are calling for participatory responses from Nigerians. According to Paschal Ochang of the Department of Computer Science, Federal University of Lafia, the research objective is to push for better data governance and data protection legislation in Nigeria.

  • A focus group interview over zoom and Skype with representatives of the research institutions both in the UK and Nigeria is part of this research and we solicit your voluntary participation. Your contributions will help us to:
    Identify the cultural, social, political and economic factors that shape Nigerians understanding and perceptions on data protection and privacy in relation to data in these sectors: health, transport, public sector, finance, education/research and security.
  • To understand common data related concerns in Nigeria
  • To better understand the Nigeria’s data ecosystem.

The research is an effort to push for better data governance and data protection legislation in Nigeria.

  • Your participation in this interview is entirely voluntary

Researchers’ Responsibilities;

  • Information gained from you will only be used for the purpose of this research and will not be recorded in excess of what is required in accordance with existing Data policies
  • Only the research team research team will have access to the participants’ information.
  • nly anonymised or de-identified data will be shared outside the project team. This will facilitate further use/reuse of the data.
  • This research will pay particular attention to data security throughout the data processing and possible sharing of data. The personal information of participants will be stored separately from the survey files. Version control mechanisms will be used to ensure the security and authenticity of the files due to the fact that multiple users will have editing rights to the files.
  • Data deletion/destruction will be consistent with Nigeria Data service guidelines and to reduce risks of data loss through system failures or human errors, this research will ensure regular backups of systems containing relevant dataset. Institutional backup policies will be used.
  • Finally, this research adheres to the principles of Responsible Research and Innovation and therefore will embed its key elements such as; ethics, diversity, open access, public engagement and science education.
