Nigeria’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, this week in Abuja, commended Airtel Nigeria for putting compliance to regulations above profit.

Pantami who was speaking to a delegation of the mobile network operator (MNO) led by Group Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa formerly CEO of Airtel Nigeria Mr. Segun Ogunsanya, said his several interactions with the MNO has convinced him that Airtel puts quality service and adherence to regulations above profit, an important goal in business.

Ogunsanya led his team to introduce his successor, Mr. Surendran Chemmenkotil who takes over from him as the former CEO of Airtel Nigeria. Ogunsanya led Airtel Nigeria for nine years before his new assignment to  lead the group’s operations across Africa. 

“Investors are in business to make profit, it is also an imperative for businesses to comply with the laws and regulations of the industry and I am delighted to say Airtel with the leadership of Mr. Ogunsanya has done very well in this regard,” said Pantami.

The minister assured Airtel of his ministry’s continuous support and said MNOs are considered as partners in the country’s agenda for digital economy even as growth in the ICT and telecommunications sector, now accounting for 17.5% contribution to the country’s GDP, underscores the encouraging successes in the industry despite overwhelming challenges.

While congratulating Ogunsanya on his new task as Group Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, the minister expressed confidence that the MNO will continue to record successes in Nigeria and across the continent.  

“You have done a great deal to support our business and indeed the growth of the telecommunications industry and I pray for your continued success,” said. Ogunsanya in his response.
