Jos to host Northern Nigeria’s biggest social media conference this week

Jos, the capital city of Plateau state in north central Nigeria is to play host the ‘Social Media for Social Good’ 2018 (#SMSGJos) conference this week from April 6th to 7th.

The conference opens with the theme “Out Of Many, One.” The two day event will explore finding a common ground critical for Nigeria’s economic and social wealth by shining a spotlight on peace building, fiscal transparency and public participation in the budget process in Nigeria.

Building on last year’s success which focused on using social media as an innovative tool for driving the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) in Plateau State, this year’s edition will feature talks by speakers on peace-building, leadership, democracy & governance, hate speech/fake news, unity & diversity, entrepreneurship, education and climate change.

Speakers billed to speak include the co-founder and CEO of BudgIT, Oluseun Onigbinde; CEO of Africaid Centre (US), Banjo Olaniyan; CEO of  Knowhow Media & Market Intel Inter’l Ltd., Olusegun Oruame; and CEO of Nuryne Media Consult Ltd., Mallam Awwalu Salisu. Others are Henriju Gadzama, a lecturer at the University of Jos, Jiritmwa Goyit, a Social Advocate; Samuel Famolu of SabiLawyer; and Collins Ajonye, a digital strategist at XplicitMode alongside other over 20 speakers from Abuja, Kaduna, Lagos and Jos.

Activities lined up for the conference are panel discussions where participants will have an in-depth understanding of the topics discussed; breakout sessions where participants will learn, experientially, how to use social media and other innovative tools responsibly for creating change and measuring impact; fireside Chat and lastly the Tomruk Awards which is dedicated to recognizing outstanding achievements and innovative efforts to promote action on the sustainable development goals in Nigeria.

According to the organizers, Tomruk Ihub Multiverse, the aim of #SMSGJos is to bring together individuals who are interested and committed to the progressive growth and development of people, community and are willing to share their time, ideas, experience and knowledge in that regard. This has also led to a bigger goal of making Jos the Social Media Hub of Africa.

“We believe that by creating an enlightening, positive, supportive, and high energy environment, we can help businesses-help each other grow,” said the founder of Tomrukihub Multiverse, Job David Ayuba.

#SMSGJos 2018 is organized in partnership with BudgIT, Jos Business School and AfricAID Center (US).
