Here you go, WhatsApp messenger, your highly encrypted mobile messaging service will now do more than merely sharing messages.

Now, you can make money transactions as social media giant Facebook announces that it has added a payment platform to enable more than 1.5 billion monthly users of WhatsApp around the world, send money or make purchases.

The digital payment feature for now is available to all users in Brazil where it is being piloted with plans to expand to the rest of the world.

According to Facebook, for the first time, users will be able to send money or make purchases from local business without leaving their chat.

“Payments on WhatsApp are beginning to roll out to people across Brazil beginning today and we look forward to bringing it to everyone as we go forward”.

“Sending money or making payments is a free option for WhatsApp users, but businesses will be charged a processing fee on par with those charged for typically credit card transactions,” they added.

Digital payments on WhatsApp will be tied to credit or debit cards to start, and transactions will require special identification codes or fingerprint verification.

Facebook sees long-term, money-making potential in enabling businesses to engage in online conversations and transactions with customers via its social media and messaging venues.
